THE PROACTIVE CLIENT
by Kristie Coomer
“It is important for clients to be proactive and not reactive when working towards resolving their criminal cases. There are a few simple tasks that clients can to do assist their legal team. Communicate – check your emails, return phone calls, ask if you don’t understand something such as a class or referral. Show up for court on time Follow your bond conditions . Be honest with your attorney and the legal team. Remember we are here to help you and want you to succeed but it is important to be proactive in your case.”
CLIENT INTAKE
by Taylor Ann Storbeck
“Gaining a new client comes with lots of information. What is important is to have a nice and condensed intake form. At our firm, we have several intake forms, they are based on types of Legal matters that we handle. Each intake has specified questions for that matter that the client will fill out for our records. This helps the client be able to also narrow down what information that they need to give at the beginning of a case. This also helps our office with initial pleadings, and we can use that information from there.
When we first speak with a client we grab initial information about the case that they possibly may have and that helps us determine what office it is for, along with what matter type. As time has gone on, asking intake questions helps the attorney know what kind of case that it could be. Over time learning the types of cases that can come through our offices has helped me be able to know when to ask those questions for each type. I work a lot with the clients in the beginning and that has helped me a lot with helping those intakes.”
CLIENT DOCUMENTS
by Taylor Ann Storbeck
“Documentation is very important to every case. We strive to receive important documentation at the first few meetings. That could be any paperwork that you may have been served with, anything that is evidence that can help prove your claim, and paperwork that we may need for future Discovery needs. PLEASE PROVIDE THE SERVED PAPERWORK IMMEDIATELY. This helps us with being able to determine what our pleadings will need to consist of and also other information for your case. Gathering paperwork can get overwhelming especially during Discovery, as long as you are communicating with us and sending the required items it will go as smooth as we can. We take documentation electronically or physically. We strive with working with clients to getting those items from you in the easiest way possible. You are in a sensitive time, trying to make this run as smooth as we can is a goal of ours.
I know sometimes it can feel invasive when you have to provide certain information, for example, financial records. However, it is in your best interest to work side by side with us and gathering said documentation. Discovery is a big game, it can get suffocating, but the earlier you start, the faster it will go. It is important to take at least a week to gather those items and give to us, our office will go through all that and make sure there is not anything else we need get from you. We are your team, we are here to help you and provide the support during your legal help.”
INVENTORY & APPRAISMENT
by Season Chadwick, Paralegal
“If you are going through a divorce, one of the most important tools for your attorney is your Inventory and Appraisement. This document provides a clear and concise picture of all assets and debts related to the community estate acquired during your marriage, separate estates, and any reimbursement claims for the estates. The reason this document is so essential to your case is because it provides an accurate picture of assets and debts that will need to be divided in the divorce. This applies whether you are attempting to negotiate in mediation or going to trial. You may or may not know what should be listed in your inventory, so the best practice is to talk through it openly with your attorney or paralegal. Perhaps there are assets you know exist, but you don’t have access to the current statements or information. Or maybe you need clarification of what should be listed in the community estate and what should be designated as separate property. We can work through this information with you to develop a complete picture of what needs to be divided. Once your Inventory is complete, your attorney will be able to determine key points of division with clarity and can effectively guide you to the best possible outcome for your case.”

HELP ME HELP YOU
by Kim Weber, Paralegal
In order to better serve our clients, the following are vital to your case:
listen to hear, not respond
Listen to what your attorney/paralegal is telling you. They have your best interest at heart.
Separate your emotions from logical decision making
We understand this is a super sensitive and emotional time for each of our clients. We do our best to do right by you.
Please provide us with everything we ask you to provide us, exactly how we request it. Nothing more unless we ask for it. It slows us down in being productive and will incur more legal fees for you. Refusal to participate in your own litigation or timely communicate/respond, can result in attorneys fees to opposing counsel/party and additional legal fees to us.
We understand the frustrations with having to provide us with so much information, however, we are bound by law to answer requests for discovery within 30 days. Even if the other party has access to the information they’re requesting, you are required by law to provide the documents/information requested.
Also, please send us any documents we request in a .pdf format. The Courts require this. Oftentimes the documents we receive come through the size of a postage stamp. This is crucial as we may have to present this to the Judge or opposing counsel/party and they will need to be able to read the document.
To avoid unnecessary legal fees, compose your thoughts/emotions/wishes, etc. into one email. Remember, we charge by the hour and in 1/10 increments, so to avoid a hefty invoice, please stay to the point and send one email to address all your concerns, etc.
Before you sign ANYTHING, read it word for word. If you have ANY questions, ask us.
